An Evening of Indian Classical Music with Partha Bose and Shiv Shankar Ray
Friday July 16th 2010
Brighton Unitarian Church
Indian Classical Music comes to Brighton in its finest and most exhilarating form. A rare opportunity to see two masters of this genre perform in an intimate and beautiful venue in central Brighton. Sitar and tabla played in the North Indian Hindustani tradition consisting of Raag (melody) and Taal (rhythm).
A leading instrumentalist of the current generation, Partha Bose has an uncanny flair for communicating with listeners world-wide through his Sitar.
Trained for more than 4 decades in the truest traditions of GURU-SHISHYA PARAMPARA by revered GURU, Pandit MONOJ SHANKAR of MAIHAR GHARANA, Partha is credited with a singularly distinct approach to music, reflecting an imaginative synthesis of virtuosity and creativity. Lauded by connoisseurs for his performances in major music festivalsof India ( including Dover Lane Conference, Amir Khan Samaroh, Mahamrityunjay Mahotsav, Vasant Rao Deshpande Smruti Samaroh ) & international festivals ( including Bath Festival, Maastricht Univ festival, Black & Gold Series, Nebraska, USA, National Multicultural Ferstival, Canberra, Australia ) Partha divides his time between Kolkata, his home, and rest of the world - performing, composing, teaching, lecturing at countless venues including reputed universities.
Partha Bose earned a rare distinction when tabla legend, Pandit Kishen Maharaj accompanied him in a sensational concert in Kolkata in March 2006, - the maestro's last performance in the "Mecca" of music.
International media - including BBC radio, Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, German radio, Voice of America, Indian radio & television - have featured Bose in programmes and interviews to share his vision of life and of music.
The Government of India invited Bose to lead a cultural delegation to African countries on the historic occasion of Golden Jubilee of India´s Independence.
Partha Bose visualizes music as a universal language which breaks barriers and reminds us of our shared humanity.
One of the leading exponents of the Tabla is Calcutta born maestro Shiv Shankar Ray. Not only a performer but also a very respected teacher, he represents the Farukkabadi style of playing, which is amongst the oldest of the authentic styles. He studied under the renowned late Pandit Jnan Prakash Ghosh of Calcutta.
